Frequently Asked Questions About DSC Testing
Find answers to common questions about SEAM’s DSC testing capabilities, applications and how thermal analysis can support material selection, quality control and failure investigation.
What is DSC testing and what does it measure?
Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) measures how a material absorbs or releases heat as temperature changes. It can identify thermal events including glass transition, melting, crystallisation, curing reactions and oxidation onset.
What materials can be tested using DSC?
DSC can be used to characterise a wide range of materials, including polymers, pharmaceuticals, foods, biological materials, organic chemicals and inorganic materials.
How can DSC testing help with material selection and product development?
DSC helps engineers and product developers understand how materials behave under changing temperatures. The results can support material comparison, process optimisation, quality control, compatibility studies and investigation of the effects of ageing or additives
Can DSC be used for failure analysis and quality investigations?
Yes. DSC can compare failed components with known-good samples to identify differences in thermal behaviour or material structure. SEAM has used DSC alongside FTIR to investigate polymer component failures and identify differences that were not apparent through chemical analysis alone.
